Hypnotherapy, explained clearly.
HOW IT WORKS

Hypnotherapy uses focused attention, therapeutic conversation and carefully chosen techniques to help you work with patterns that may otherwise feel automatic.
It is a collaborative process. You remain aware, involved and able to respond throughout, while we focus on the change you would like to create.
Hypnosis is more familiar than you may think.
Most of us experience periods of natural absorption—times when attention becomes so engaged that distractions recede and our awareness of time or surroundings shifts.
These everyday experiences are not the same as clinical hypnosis, but they can help explain how focused and absorbed attention may feel.
FOCUSED ATTENTION

Absorbed in a story
You become immersed in a book, film or conversation and briefly pay less attention to what is happening around you.

Travelling a familiar route
Arriving at a familiar destination to realise parts of the journey passed with little conscious attention, while remaining capable of responding when needed.

Deeply focused on an activity
You become absorbed in gardening, writing, making something or solving a problem and lose track of time.
In clinical hypnotherapy, focused attention is invited deliberately and directed towards a therapeutic purpose.

Lost in a performance
You become so immersed in what is happening on stage or screen that everything else seems to drop away.
THE EXPERIENCE
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis can feel different from one person to another—and even from one session to the next. Some people notice a distinct shift in awareness, while others feel much as they normally do, only more focused or absorbed.
The depth of relaxation or unusualness of the experience does not determine whether the therapeutic work is useful.

Focused and absorbed
Your attention may turn inward, with thoughts, sensations or the sound of my voice becoming more prominent while other distractions recede.
Relaxed or physically settled
You may notice slower breathing, reduced muscle tension, heaviness, lightness, warmth or stillness. You may also remain physically alert. Relaxation is helpful for many people, but it is not required.
Aware of your surroundings
You can usually still hear sounds inside or outside the room. These sounds do not mean hypnosis has stopped or that you are “doing it wrong.”
Able to speak and respond
You remain able to answer questions, describe what you are noticing, adjust your position, open your eyes or ask to pause.
Other experiences
Time may seem to pass more quickly or slowly. Imagery, memories, emotions or physical sensations may feel more vivid—or the experience may feel quiet and ordinary.

You are not unconscious
Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. Even when deeply relaxed, you can usually hear what is being said and remain aware of the experience.
Retain your judgement
You do not lose your values, decision-making ability or capacity to evaluate what is being suggested. A suggestion is an invitation, not a command.
You can pause at any time
You can speak, move, open your eyes, request a change of direction or end the process whenever you choose.
You choose what to share
You don't have to reveal private information. You decide what you discuss. Therapy can progress without revisiting every detail of an experience.

You remain in control.
AWARE AND INVOLVED
Hypnosis does not remove your awareness, judgement or ability to choose. You remain an active participant throughout the session.

How therapeutic change is approached.
Many thoughts, emotional reactions and behaviours become increasingly automatic through learning and repetition. Some may once have helped you cope, feel safe or meet an important need, even if they no longer serve you well.
Hypnotherapy gives us a focused setting in which to understand these patterns, develop more useful responses and rehearse making them available in everyday life.

WORKING WITH PATTERNS
01 · UNDERSTAND THE PATTERN
We explore what is happening, when it tends to occur and what may be maintaining it.
This may include triggers, thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, learned associations and the ways you currently respond. We do not need to force every difficulty into a single explanation before useful work can begin.
02 · DEVELOP DIFFERENT RESPONSES
Using hypnosis and therapeutic conversation, we work with the pattern in ways suited to you.
This may involve suggestion, imagery, language, sensation, emotional processing or mental rehearsal—helping calmer, safer or more constructive responses become easier to access.
03 · CARRY CHANGE INTO EVERYDAY LIFE
We connect the work to the situations in which you want change to occur.
Sessions may include future rehearsal, practical strategies or simple between-session activities that allow new responses to be noticed, practised and strengthened.
In clinical hypnotherapy, focused attention is invited deliberately and directed towards a therapeutic purpose.
What happens in a session.
Conversation and assessment
We begin with what has been happening, what you would like to change and how the difficulty affects your life.
In your initial appointment, we can explore the wider pattern—including triggers, responses, relevant experiences and what you have already tried.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Agree on the focus
Together, we clarify what would be most useful to work towards during the session.
I explain the proposed approach, answer your questions and check that you feel comfortable proceeding.
Prepare and settle
I guide you to focus your attention in a way that suits you. This may involve breathing, noticing physical sensations, listening closely or allowing attention to become more absorbed.
You do not need to empty your mind or relax perfectly.
Each appointment is shaped around your needs, but knowing the general process can make the experience feel more comfortable. There is time to talk, ask questions and agree on the general direction before hypnosis begins.

Reflect and plan next steps
We briefly discuss what you noticed and any practical steps that may help carry the work into daily life.
We then decide whether another appointment would be useful, rather than assuming a predetermined number of sessions.
Return to ordinary alertness
When the therapeutic work is complete, I guide your attention back towards the room and ordinary alertness.
Most people feel calm and clear, although experiences vary. We allow time for you to reorient before standing or leaving.
Personalised therapeutic work
Once your attention is engaged, we work with the agreed focus using methods selected for you.
This may include suggestion, imagery, language, sensation, emotional processing, mental rehearsal or conversational techniques. You can speak and provide feedback throughout.

Personalised to the person in front of me.
Two people may seek support for a similar concern while experiencing it in very different ways. Their triggers, beliefs, emotional responses, strengths and goals may have little in common.
I tailor the therapeutic approach to what we learn about you and how your mind responds. Your feedback during and between sessions helps guide what we use next.
PERSONALISED THERAPY

Imagery—where helpful
Some people respond readily to imagined scenes, symbols or memories. When imagery is useful, it can help make desired responses feel more vivid and personally meaningful.
Language and suggestion
Carefully chosen language and therapeutic suggestions can direct attention towards new possibilities, reinforce motivation and support different ways of thinking or responding.
Sensation and body awareness
For people who connect more naturally with physical experience, we may work with breathing, comfort, movement, temperature, tension or other bodily sensations.
Mental and emotional rehearsal
We can rehearse approaching a future situation with the thoughts, feelings and behaviours you would prefer to have available when it occurs.
NLP and practical strategies
Where appropriate, I may draw upon NLP, mindfulness, breathwork and cognitive or behavioural strategies to support the hypnotic work and help translate it into daily life.
No need to visualise clearly
Some people do not form clear mental pictures—and that does not prevent useful hypnotic work. We can use words, ideas, sensations, memories or direct suggestion instead.

My methods are adapted to your needs, preferences and responses.
What research tells us.
Attention and absorption
Hypnosis can help organise attention around a particular idea, sensation or therapeutic goal while competing distractions become less prominent.
RESEARCH & UNDERSTANDING
Research supports hypnosis as a genuine psychological phenomenon involving focused attention and responsiveness to suggestion. Studies suggest that hypnosis can influence how people experience thoughts, sensations and perceptions—not simply how relaxed they feel. Oakley & Halligan, 2013
Brain-imaging studies have also identified changes in networks involved in attention, cognitive control and self-related awareness during hypnosis. However, findings vary between people, suggestions and study methods, and researchers have not identified one universal “hypnotic state” in the brain. Landry, Lifshitz & Raz, 2017
Processing sensation and meaning
Suggestions can influence how an experience is interpreted and responded to. This is particularly relevant when working with perception, emotional reactions, learned associations and pain.
Awareness of internal experience
Focused attention may make thoughts, emotions, memories, imagery or physical sensations easier to observe and work with deliberately.

Research helps us understand aspects of hypnosis, but a brain scan cannot tell us exactly how any individual will experience or respond to it.

What hypnosis can—and cannot—do.
REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
Hypnotherapy can create useful conditions for change, but it is not a magical cure or a way of overriding your mind. Its value comes from combining focused attention and therapeutic methods with your goals, participation and willingness to engage.
